Moving Day!

Today was great. We didn’t have any planned errands to do, so it was basically a day off. We woke up a little bit later (later being 8am) and had breakfast; rice porridge.
Michael and Kwadwo took us to the beach, and we spent a good 4 hours there. I am now the same colour as a lobster, and in quite a lot of pain. It is completely my fault though; hadn’t planned on spending that long at the beach and definitely didn’t put any sunscreen on. We walked up and down the beach collecting shells, and then the boys swam for about 2 hours with some other kids that came and went.

It is hilarious how interesting our skin colour makes us in Ghana. We are celebrities! This group of 2 girls, and 2 guys around our age came up to us, sat down on the beach with us and asked if we would take pictures with them for their Facebook page. I assume that they will be telling people we are their friends from Canada and I don’t even remember their names haha...except Isaac. Because he said “he had a great name because it came from the Bible.”
Several more people asked us for our phone numbers and “contact info” as they always put it. We continue to stick with the story that we have no phones in Ghana, only the internet. Who cares if they dig us up on Facebook somehow.

After we got back from the beach, we basically had to pack up our bags and wait for Akua to pick us up. EXCEPT. Oh. This is important. I got to take a real shower. The water was working again. VERY exciting thing to take note of. Showers without buckets are fantastic.

We were supposed to leave around 3:30pm for Asamankese, and in good old fashion Ghana timing, we left at about 5:30pm. We said our goodbyes to the Biney family, and even though I will miss them, I know that we will visit, and Mummy offered her house to us anytime that we are back in Accra. Great to have a second family in Ghana. We took those bumpy roads all the way here and made it safely around 8pm! Auntie Joe met us with a great big hug.

Now we are just unpacking our things and settling in. I am very excited to be able to find things without rummaging through suitcases. It will also be nice to kind of have our own space and some privacy too. Belinda is going to start cooking for us tomorrow with breakfast, and we are going to our first church service in Ghana. 4 hours. In Twi. It is probably going to be a long day.
I am excited to meet everyone tomorrow though. Many of the women we will be teaching go to this church, and my professor, Mary; her dad is preaching tomorrow and helping us feel more at home.

I am super excited about being here in Asamankese, and I’m really nervous about the next 3 months and what they hold for Petra and I. I am hoping that we adjust to this new place quickly and that we will feel at home soon!
Many of the churches in this town are making announcements about our classes tomorrow during their services, so please keep these women in your prayers. Pray that they feel loved and welcome to our classes, that they feel important to us, and that many people will feel it in their hearts to join us. The numbers in the classes have slowly been going down since this program has been started and we would love to see the class sizes get bigger!! Thanks for your thoughts and prayers everyone!

I am now exhausted and going to bed.

  1. Love that Ghanaian timing hahahah! What does this mean for your anticipated 4 hr service? Hope it doesn't stretch to 5 hrs LOL! I know you will love having your own space for sure...spread those things around and have some water all to yourselves! Glad the week was eventful with all the 'contact info' you gave out hahahah. Yes, you are celebrities and by now, you are on FB pages hahahah. Enjoy your time tomorrow - dad is already there - he got there Saturday morning. Please laugh when he cracks jokes...he's not always so funny but he doesn't know this LOL! Love to y'all and make sure you dance at church so they'll know I taught you something!
