This morning I got up and decided to do some laundry before
the heat of the day was done, or it started to rain, or the water turned
off...all things we are learning to adjust to and plan ahead for. I am getting used
to doing laundry, “small small” and the open cuts on my knuckles are slowly
turning into calluses now that I have been washing my clothes more regularly.
I decided to clean up my stuff today...for anyone who knows
me well enough, they know that I am NOT a tidy person. I am organized when it
come to all other things in life, but not my clothes. My room is always a huge
mess and although I own both a closet and a dresser, I do not make good use of
them. The floor is what holds all of my clothes. Unfortunately for Petra, being
in Africa is no exception. My room is a mess.
I decided to move all the clothes that I would not wear
while being here back into my suitcases. (Yes, I have clothes here that I won’t
wear...either because I don’t want to wreck them, or because it is hotter than
I expected. I also need to account for the fact that I am excessive when I
pack...). This is why my suitcases were overweight. Not to mention that I
counted and realized that I brought 50 pairs of panties with me...who even
NEEDS 50 pairs of underwear!?
Dad, this is why we started getting upset with each other in
the airport before I left. I now sincerely apologize for raising my voice at
you, you are right; I pack too much and bring too much unnecessary crap
everywhere with me. I am sorry for giving you my shampoo and conditioner to
keep back, just so that I could bring 10 bottles of nail polish and 12 pudding
cups with me. You are right. I am wrong. Not something you hear from me too often
so maybe print this blog out? Haha.
This afternoon, a bunch of the students from Kujo’s school
visited us at home. They came over on their way home from school and showed us
their notebooks and exercise books. Some of them look like they would actually
be super helpful for us to teach with!
Some of the children like to continuously ask us to give
them things; pens, jewellery, sometimes money. This is something that still
takes getting used to. We try to limit the number of things that we give out to
the kids here, things as simple as stickers and candy, so that they don’t come
to expect them every time we play with them.
Today was a big “business” day; I planned a lot of my
lessons and worked through a lot of information for the program. It was a super
nice evening out, nice and cool, so I enjoyed sitting outside while I planned
some of them.
