Me ma wo a
che! That means “good morning” in Twi. I learnt that this morning.
Before 8am. Productive eh?
This morning Petra and I walked to town. It was a market
day, so there were lots of our students to visit and it was busy as always!
We did some photocopying for class and visited Smart at his
shop. We continued down the main hill and through the busy trotro station (a
little shortcut that we take to get to Anita’s stand) where all of the men say,
“eh! Obruni! Where you go? Where you go?”
We got to Anita’s stand, which is always filled with
different people; ladies selling palm oil, tomatoes, onions. Much to my
pleasant surprise she brought her new little book with her to record her sales
and expenses! I am so proud, it’s only the first day and she is already putting
what we learned in class to use! Yay. Proud teacher right hereeee!
We saw Emelia on our way back home getting her hair done at
a salon along the main road in town.
When we got back home, Kujo was waiting for us with...wait
for it...MAIL FROM HOME!!!! Yay! I got M&M’s from my parents and they
weren’t even all melted! That was pretty exciting. And thank, you Oma and Opa,
for your letter too. I loved it! The candies weren’t smushed together, they are
still all separated. So thank you, if you are reading this. I love you.
This afternoon, Elizabeth and Charity, two girls that love
to say hi to us whenever they see us, dropped by to visit. They saw our
English-Twi book and decided to teach us some words. That helped, because the
book doesn’t show you how to pronounce the words, it just shows you what the
saying is and how to spell it. They stuck around for a bit and laughed at how
badly we said all the words.
Tomorrow is Independence Day here in Ghana. Now, holidays in
Ghana are not just holidays. They are HUGE celebrations. Today, school kids got
out of class early to prep their outfits for tomorrow. Tomorrow (the actual
holiday), all the school children will march in a parade for Independence Day.
Wednesday, is a holiday and everything is closed again so that the people can
rest after having the holiday. It is like a 3 day event! Crazy.
We still have class tomorrow afternoon and Wednesday, so we
shall see how many of our students show up. Hopefully we have at least a few!?
We are started to believe how much it will eventually rain
during the rainy season. It has rained for at least 20 minutes, everyday now
for the past couple weeks. It is starting to get windier, and rain harder when
it does. If this is any indication for the rainy season, we should suggest to
the new interns to bring their umbrellas!! Wish we had brought ours!
